The Tome of R'lyeh is a Pre-Hardmode spell tome that is dropped by R'lyehian. When used, it rapidly sprouts purple tentacles from the ground in a random spread at the cursor position. However, if the cursor is stray far away from the ground, the tentacles will be fired from the player instead.
