Those moon jellies are smarter than they seem. With only a bit of coordination and a sharp sense of fashion, they can become a far tougher adversary than any one jelly could ever be.

Moon Jelly Wizard is a Pre-Hardmode boss. It is intended to be fought after the Eye of Cthulhu, but before the Eater of Worlds/Brain of Cthulhu.

When the Moon Jelly Wizard is alive, its exclusive track Viscious Squid will play.

Spawn

The Moon Jelly Wizard does not spawn on its own, and requires the player to summon it with a Dreamlight Jelly, which can be caught during the Jelly Deluge using a Bug Net or its variants. It can be fought anywhere at night.

Behavior

The Moon Jelly Wizard floats in the air and exclusively moves by erratic dashes and teleportation. It will launch a nonstop barrage of different attacks at the player in a random order.

As with most nocturnal bosses, if the Moon Jelly Wizard is not defeated by dawn (4:30 AM), or if all players die, it will despawn.

Phase 1

  • Dashes at the player, dealing 30 / 48 / 61 damage, while leaving a trail of harmless lightning behind.
    • The Moon Jelly Wizard will always perform this attack immediately after concluding a different attack, with the exception of its teleports.
  • Fires three pairs of wavy energy orbs, with every pair coming out ~1.5 seconds after the previous. Each pair is chained together with lightning that deals 30 / 44 / 66 damage, alongside having a chance to inflict Electrified.
  • Releases a Wizard Ball.png magic ball that travels for ~1 second before exploding into a ring of 6 Arcane Star.png Arcane Stars, which fly outwards before returning to their origins, dealing 50 / 72 / 96 damage.
  • Attempts to teleport towards the player twice — with the location of the teleports being telegraphed by blue sparks — releasing a ring of Tiny Lunazoa.gif Tiny Lunazoas that spread outwards for one second after each teleport, with each Tiny Lunazoa.gif Tiny Lunazoa dealing 40 / 60 / 78 damage.
    • This is the only main attack where the Moon Jelly Wizard will not dash at the player after its conclusion.
  • Summons a spaced rain of lightning that comes from the left side of the screen, telegraphed by thin beams. The lightning strikes after ~1 second, dealing 20 / 28 / 36 damage, alongside always inflicting Electrified.

Phase 2

Once the Moon Jelly Wizard's HP falls below 33%, multiple attacks will become faster, alongside gaining access to one new attack:

  • Stops in place, manifesting an aura and summoning 8 Tiny Lunazoa.gif Tiny Lunazoas around itself, each of which transform into an Arcane Star.png Arcane Star and launch themselves at the player, dealing 49 / 58 / 82 damage each.

Upon falling under 100 HP, each hit the Moon Jelly Wizard takes will release an extremely small Tiny Lunazoa.gif Tiny Lunazoa, which will rise upwards. Upon death, the Moon Jelly Wizard explodes into a cloud of Tiny Lunazoa.gif Tiny Lunazoas.
