Atlas is a Hardmode boss that is intended to be fought after Golem and before the Lunatic Cultist. However, the encounter is entirely optional and is not required for progression.

Spawn

Atlas can be summoned anywhere at any time with a Stone Fist. Atlas will not deal contact damage for the first five seconds upon spawning, to prevent cheap hits.

Upon spawning, a brief animation plays where Atlas remains stationary before spawning its two arms, which slowly appear from either sides of the boss, starting with the right arm and then the left arm. As the arms spawn, they will launch themselves downwards and upon hitting the ground, both arms cause a visual screen shake. After the arms spawn, Atlas launches itself downwards for a brief moment before beginning to attack the player.

Behavior

Atlas is a relatively slow boss, who lets its arms do most of the physical attacking. Its arms are invincible and cannot be damaged by any means. Upon being summoned, the screen is covered in a fully opaque gray filter. Throughout the battle, visual screen shakes can occur at random intervals.

Atlas attacks the player by lunging itself towards them and firing prismatic bolts at certain intervals. As the boss loses health, it summons a ring of Cobbled Eyes, which orbit around the boss and fire miracle beams at the player. The amount of Cobbled Eyes that spawn vary depending on Atlas's current health.

While Atlas is alive, all players are inflicted with the Unstable Affliction debuff, which decreases their movement speed by 10%. If all players in the world are dead or the player is too far away from Atlas, it will float upwards into the sky and eventually despawn off-screen.

Attacks

  • Atlas lunges itself towards the player in attempt to deal contact damage. When it is in close distance with the player, it will attempt to latch onto them. While latched onto the player, it will be unable to perform anymore lunges.
  • Atlas swings its arms at the player in attempt to deal damage.
  • Atlas fires bursts of 6-7 Prismatic Bolt.pngPrismatic Bolts at the player in a random spread. Prismatic bolts pass through tiles and gain velocity as they travel.
  • When below 75% health, Atlas summons a ring of 5 Cobbled Eyes, which periodically fire Miracle Beam.pngMiracle Beams.
    • Its arms swing farther and faster.
  • When below 50% health, Atlas summons a ring of 10 Cobbled Eyes slightly farther away from itself.
    • Cobbled Eyes fire miracle beams much more often, and its arms swing even faster and farther.
  • When below 25% health, Atlas summons a ring of 41 Cobbled Eyes much farther away from itself. These Cobbled Eyes spin significantly faster than the other orbiting Cobbled Eyes.

In Expert Mode

  • When below 10% health, Atlas fires prismatic bolts twice as fast.

Notes

  • Atlas's defense increases linearly from 48 to 83 as its health decreases.
  • Atlas does not drop any money in Normal Mode, but the Treasure Bag always drops between 7 and 11 Gold Coins.
  • Both of Atlas's arms seem to deal different amounts of damage, with the left arm dealing the most damage and the right arm dealing less damage, this may not be intentional.

Trivia

  • The Bestiary icon.pngBestiary entry for the Atlas: "A fractured sentinel built millenia ago to protect the land from those who would dare to scar its natural form. Now, it seems you have made yourself its target."
