Once thought to be a deity, this particular beetle comes from an elusive species that is equally massive.

Scarabeus is a Pre-Hardmode boss and the first boss of the Spirit Mod. It is intended to be fought after King Slime.

While Scarabeus is alive, its exclusive track Crawling Complications will play.

Spawn

Scarabeus does not spawn on its own and requires the player to summon it with a Scarab Idol during the day, while in the Desert biome. It cannot be summoned at night. The Scarab Idol itself can be crafted or given to the player by the Adventurer in exchange for the Decrepit Idol, which can be found in the Ancient Ziggurat structure in the Desert.

Behavior

Scarabeus will crawl and jump along the ground, using a fixed series of attacks; its attack patterns will also adapt slightly to match the player's arena setup and position relative to itself. If it is taken outside the Desert, Scarabeus will enrage and gain massively boosted defense until the player returns.

Note that Scarabeus will only do contact damage when performing certain physical attacks — primarily its dashes and slams — making it completely viable to fight with true melee.

Additionally, despite only being able to summon it during the day, its fight doesn't change nor does it despawn when night falls.

Phase 1

  • Attempts to run into the player, though this deals no damage. Note that Scarabeus temporarily loses its knockback resistance during this attack.
  • Leaps over the player, releasing two volleys of three gravity-affected Sandball.png sand balls into the air.
  • Curls into a ball and quickly lunges at the player.
  • Flies above the player and attempts to position itself directly over them. After a few seconds, it will dive down and slam into the ground, causing a large number of sand balls (telegraphed by harmless sand geysers) to erupt from the ground.
    • After performing the last slam, Scarabeus will be stunned in place for ~2.5 seconds, leaving it vulnerable.
  • Digs into the ground and tunnels back and forth, before lunging at the player at a high velocity.
    • The lunge is telegraphed by a repeated sound cue, and its position will be given away by a harmless sand geyser.

Expert Mode Phase 1

In Expert Mode, upon being summoned, Scarabeus will perform a modified first cycle with different attacks:

  • Flies over to the player, then dashes towards them twice in a row.
  • Flies above the player and attempts to position itself directly over them. After a few seconds, it will dive down and slam into the ground, causing a large number of Sandball.png sand blasts to erupt from the ground.
    • After performing the last slam, Scarabeus will be stunned in place for ~2.5 seconds.
  • Digs into the ground and tunnels back and forth, before lunging at the player.

After performing these three attacks, Scarabeus will reset to the beginning of its normal cycle.

Phase 2

Upon reaching 50% HP, Scarabeus summons a purely visual sandstorm in the background as it starts flying. Its defense lowers to 6, and it will start using an enhanced attack pattern:

  • Flies in loops, summoning one / two stream(s) of Scarabs that cuts across the screen in an X formation; the stream's trajectory is telegraphed by a golden streak.
  • Lines up horizontally with the player and dashes two / three times in a row.
  • Flies into the air and slams downwards three times, causing multiple Sandball.png sand blasts to erupt from the ground upon impact.
    • After performing the last slam, Scarabeus will be stunned in place for ~2.5 seconds.
  • Flies back and forth above the player, raining down volleys of Sandball.png sand balls. In addition, sand geysers will be summoned on either side of the player to limit mobility.
  • Summons two groups of invincible beetles that fly above the player. As Scarabeus tries to fly into the player, the two groups of beetles will dive-bomb the player in order, dying on impact onto the surface.
  • Lines up horizontally with the player and dashes once.

Notes

  • If the player leaves the Desert, all damage done to the boss is reduced by 67%.
  • Upon Scarabeus' death, a Sandstorm will be created.
