The matriarch of an extinct avian predator species, brought back to life through sheer will to protect the yolk of its last remaining spawn.

The Ancient Avian is a Pre-Hardmode boss. It is intended to be fought alongside the Queen Bee.

While the Avian is alive, its exclusive Music will play.

Spawn

The Ancient Avian does not spawn on its own, and requires the player to either summon it with a Feather Crown in Space, or to break the Avian Egg that spawns on Avian Islands.

Behavior

The Ancient Avian flies around the player, shooting clusters of bone feathers and a series of arcane waves. It also stops moving to create a windstorm and rain energy comets from the sky. The Avian also creates a pattern of silver tornados that buffet players upward. In Expert Mode, the Avian fires exploding feathers alongside bone feathers, and inflicts Mighty Wind during its windstorm.

Attacks

  • The Avian flies around the player, shooting clusters of 8-10 Desert Feathers or 5-8 Exploding Feathers in a cone in their direction. Desert Feathers deal 34 / 60 / 90 damage, while Exploding Feathers deal 40 / 72 / 108 damage.
    • When above half health, the Avian fires one burst of Desert Feathers, then one burst of Exploding Feathers, another burst of Desert Feathers, and then two quick bursts of Exploding Feathers.
    • When below half health, the Avian fires just one burst of Desert Feathers.
  • The Avian closes in on the player, firing an irregular series of 6 blue Arcane Waves in their direction. These waves deal 38 / 60 / 90 damage.
  • The Avian stops moving, creates a red shield around itself that increases its defense to 26, and generates a windstorm. During this windstorm, red Energy Comets rain from the sky in a wide radius. These comets ignore tiles, and deal 44 / 72 / 108 damage.
    • When below 1,000 life, these Energy Comets fire from the side of the screen instead of the sky. The side that the comets originate from is based on the direction of the wind.
  • After the Windstorm, the Avian marks 3 areas near the player with fountains of silver dust. These fountains erupt into large, stationary silver Gustnadoes that launch any struck players upward and deal 40 / 64 / 96 damage.
    • When below 1,000 life, the Avian will summon 5 Gustnadoes instead of 3.

In Expert Mode

  • Windstorms inflict Mighty Wind based on the direction of the wind.
  • Below 60% life, the windstorm visual effect becomes permanent for the duration of the fight. This effect is only cosmetic unless the windstorm phase is occurring.
  • Below 60% life, Energy Comets constantly rain from the sky at irregular intervals in wide radius. However, these secondary Energy Comets only deal 34 / 60 / 90 damage.
